Elizabeth ‘perfected’ her indifference. She methodically destroyed any atom of love she possessed. The only constants in her life were her parents, who became simply people she lived with, such as roommates. Everyone in her life was a replaceable space holder.
Elizabeth decided to join the military on graduation. Her parents didn’t think it was a good idea, they couldn’t stop her.
It was not that she cared about her country, she wanted insulation, and the military offered that depersonalisation.
She had no problem getting through basic training, going on, learning, moving up the ranks.
They called her ‘Ice’ because she was so cold.
She took another tour of duty, because for her, the Military was easier than real life. Then Elizabeth came home to consider her options.
