The meeting with her children was disastrous, but what kept hitting Nina was that they wanted to go back to Grandma. This suggested that they didn’t live with Sam, as she believed, and apparently, didn’t want to.
Deciding to wait a bit, she let some months go by, contacted Sam’s mother and came to visit for a week.
During that week, Nina’s sons were cold, distant, didn’t want to see her or be with her.
Her ex-mother-in-law treated her as a daughter, so Nina couldn’t blame her for turning the children against her.
Nina tried, but the boys didn’t want her. Nina departed, promising to return in a few months, but the children said, “You don’t have to, we don’t want to see you.”
Although it hurt a bit and Nina left the city for her home trying to understand how and why and what there was an unmistakable scent of freedom.
