The Cleveland Cavaliers are back in rebuilding mode once again after losing too many games last season. Now, the Cavs are really in the development phase as former Michigan coach John Beilein is the new head coach this season. Choosing a college coach to coach in the NBA clearly shows that the organization in Cleveland is looking to have the coach develop players. Let’s take a look at who he will be given the opportunity to develop.
5. Darius Garland, PG, Vanderbilt. 6’3″, 173 lbs. (16.2 ppg, 2.6 apg). Garland could have been the first point guard picked in this NBA Draft, but he suffered a meniscus injury in the fifth game of the season. You could see the before and after effects once the injury occurred. Before the injury, Vanderbilt would have been an NCAA Tournament lock. After the injury, Vandy fired their coach. For him to go this high means that he should be back to almost 100 percent for the season. His athleticism and his shooting should create a positive impact for the Cavaliers this season.

26. Dylan Windler, SG, Belmont. 6’8″, 196 lbs. (21.3 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 42.9 3FG%). As soon as he steps on the court, Windler is in shooting range. Cleveland definitely needed a three-point shooter, so Windler will fit that bill off of the bench for the Cavs. He’s just not a spot-up shooter; he can get to the rim as well. He also plays solid defense and his rebounding is at a high level for a shooting guard.
30. Kevin Porter, Jr., SG, USC. 6’6″, 213 lbs. (9.5 ppg, 41.2 3FG%). The Cavaliers are taking a chance on Porter, Jr. after he had a lackluster freshman season at USC. However, he does have the potential due to his shooting and due to his jumping ability. He will need time to develop because he is lost whenever the game slows down.
Grade: The Cavs were able to surround Kevin Love with some perimeter help. Cleveland could see some long-range results if the potential becomes production down the line. I give them a C+.

Kevin Love is still with the Cavaliers. He was injured most of last season. Toronto will be contending for a playoff spot without Kawhi Leonard. The key to their season is if Pascal Siakam can become a consistent scorer with the defense focusing on stopping him every game. If OG Anunoby can remain healthy, then their playoff chances will be better.
