The Gamble Mansion and Plantation in Ellenton (near Palmetto), Florida was once a 3500 acre sugarcane plantation in the 1850’s with 200 slaves and now is a smaller Florida State Park. It was famous for the sugarcane and molasses production and then as a house for the Confederacy during the Civil War and as a hideout for Judah Benjamin after the war after he may have helped with the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Here is a postcard of the Gamble mansion after the turn of the century showing it in a more rundown state and listed as in Palmetto.
Beautiful house ..I can only imagine how it looked like it used to be.
