If you’re looking for a TV show to help you escape from the stress of daily life, look no further than DC’s new series Stargirl. The show follows Courtney Whitmore, a high school student who’s struggling with school, as she joins and restores the Justice Society of America. Whether you’re new to the superhero universe or you’ve read every comic, here’s what you need to know before you watch the show, which stars Brec Bassinger.
You’ve Seen Stargirl Before
Although Stargirl, which is executive produced by Geoff Johns, came out in May 2020, its title character isn’t new. She was debuted in July 1999 with the first issue of Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. and was in other comic series, including Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Justice League Unlimited, and Justice League Action. Additionally, this isn’t Stargirl’s first appearance on the small screen; Sarah Grey played her in Legends of Tomorrow, and Britt Irvin played her in Smallville. However, DC’s Stargirl is the first series completely dedicated to Courtney Whitmore’s story.
She’s Starman’s Successor
The show opens with the Injustice Society of America wiping out the Justice Society of America, of which Starman was an important member. While Starman doesn’t survive the attack, his sidekick, Pat Dugan, does. Starman gives Pat Dugan, who’s played by Luke Wilson, his Cosmic Staff and asks him to look after it until someone new is ready to restart the JSA. 10 years later, Courtney realizes her role as Starman’s successor before Pat Dugan even reveals his secret identity as Stripesy. Her accidental use of the Cosmic Staff alerts an ISA member, Brainwave, to her presence, but it also allows her to start finding other new members of the JSA.
