Royal wedding

On June 8, 1922, Alexander Karadjordjevic was married to the Romanian princess Maria. It was world number one event.Europe, just on its way to recover from the terrible war, has longed for normalcy and recovery, so it is seen as a first step towards establishing stability and prosperity. That is why it is not surprising that the representatives of the most distant countries in the world sent their representatives to this event in Belgrade.

Mary was one of the prettiest and most educated princesses of Europe at that time. Her grandmother was a sister of Russian Tsar Alexander III, and her grandfather was the second son of British Queen Victoria. In addition to Romanian, she spoke fluent English, German and French. Though it was a contracted marriage, the story says that the princess agreed to the wedding as she was shown photographs of King Alexander and immediately began to learn the Serbian language, so that by the time she left for Belgrade, she was already in the basics and could communicate.

The wedding was scheduled for June 8, 1922, in a relatively short time, and it was necessary to save everything for the arrival of a large number of foreign officials. 24 hours before the wedding in Belgrade, more than 20,000 people arrived!

They say that the popularity of the future Queen Mary in the nation began in the moment when, from the balcony of the Old Court, she first came to her new homeland, greeted the crowds in Serbian saying: “I thank you from my heart!”At the wedding in the church church, on the patriarch’s question, does Alexander take her husband, Maria said in Serbian: “I want! Yes!”. The same evening, in a ceremonially wrapped train, the royal couple traveled to the honeymoon in Slovenia, in Bled.

Queen Mary and King Alexander soon became a model for all European royal couples. They lived in harmony, and the marriage was crowned by three sons – Peter, Tomislav and Andrej.
