On June 8, 1922, Alexander Karadjordjevic was married to the Romanian princess Maria. Mary was one of the prettiest and most educated princesses of Europe at that time. Her grandmother was a sister of Russian Tsar Alexander III, and her grandfather was the second son of British Queen Victoria. In addition to Romanian, she spoke fluent English, German and French. Though it was a contracted marriage, the story says that the princess agreed to the wedding as she was shown photographs of King Alexander and immediately began to learn the Serbian language, so that by the time she left for Belgrade, she was already in the basics and could communicate.
