Jacob Lawrence at the Museum of Fine Arts

This painting of Tempera on board at the St Pete Museum of Fine Arts in Saint Petersburg, Florida is called “In the Heart of the Black Belt” by Jacob Lawrence in 1947.  It was a commissioned illustration on Black Southern Life for Fortune Magazine. The painter called it abstract realism and it shows farm workers who were impoverished sharecroppers waiting to be driven to the fields.
