Fly Into Books

What would you do to encourage children to read?  Would you insist?  Assign homework? Give tests?  All of these have been tried and they work on some but not all children.  I know when my kids were younger I read to them. I wanted them to use their imagination and “see” the words become pictures in their own minds. Once you have that, they are hooked.  I remember one time I called reading time and the girls rushed around me but my son decided he had other things to do in his room, so I excused him. I knew really that he was trying to be grown up and act like the story wasn’t interesting to him, but half way into the chapter, he couldn’t help himself and came out sit with the rest of them. That same young man writes books now. I like to think I nurtured that.

How do you get children to dive into a book?
