Bronze Head of Dionysus at the MFA

We are inside the MFA or Museum of Fine Arts in St Pete, Florida and looking in the classical section on Greek and Roman art.  Here we find the bronze head of Dionysus with its berry clustered ivy head wreath and silver eyes. Dionysus was the god of wine and theater. Hollow form bronze sculptures from Greece are very rare today because most were melted down in antiquity for bronze household items. This is one of only 30 left in the world.  The eyes were inlaid with silver to give them a more realistic appearance and the lips were inlaid with copper to give them a more red appearance.
