At the town of Appomattox Court House in the now National Historic Park, there is a famous two story Court House that burned down after the surrender of Lee to Grant on April 9th, 1865. It was rebuilt on its original site. I have always pictured the surrender happening at the Court House, but it occurred in “Appomattox Court House”, the town, in the McLean house just a short distance away. This Court House was very distinct with its outer staircase to the second story.
