Horse Under the Large Barn at Oconaluftee Village

Under the large barn at the Oconaluftee Mountain Museum Village in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on the North Carolina side, there was lots of equipment and even a horse. This was shaving horse or drawshaving horse used for woodworking on the farm. It was used by the woodworker sitting on the seat, pressing his foot on the “dumbead” to clamp the wood, using the shaving horse to hold the wood while using a drawknife to perhaps make a chair spindle. Under the overhang of the barn was a nice carriage also. You can see the log structure in the center of the barn.
