When walking through the lofty Rotunda room of the Ponce de Leon Hotel in Saint Augustine, Florida you can look up and see the fancy gilded ceiling. This was painted by the famous artist George Willoughby Maynard. On the ceiling were the four stages of the Spaniards: Discovery, Adventure, Conquest, and Civilization. Also represented Fire, Water, Air and Earth. The gilded ceiling was there to help light up the dimly lit room.
