Learning About the U.S. State of Tennessee

Tennessee is the 16th state to join the Union. It became the first territory that was admitted as a state under the federal Constitution. Before becoming a state Tennessee was called the Territory South of the River Ohio. The state’s name comes from a Cherokee village called Tanasi. Tennessee got its nickname during the War of 1812 when volunteer soldiers from the state played a prominent role in the war especially during the Battle of New Orleans.  Its capital Nashville is the center of country music. The largest city in the state is Memphis which is where Elvis the King of Rock and Roll began his legendary career.
