Michigan is the 26th U.S. state and has the nickname of the “Great Lakes State”. The shores of the state touch four of the five Great Lakes. Michigan is an Ojibwa (Chippewa) Indian word that means “great lake”. The state is unusual in that it consists of two parts – the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula. It’s largest city Detroit was once the center of the American auto industry and the home of Motown Records.
