Idaho joined the Union in 1890 as the 43rd state. The state is best known for its potatoes and is the number one producer of potatoes in the country. Idaho has lovely landscape ranging from sub-alpine to desert, from granite mountains to fertile farms, from lakes to waterfalls, and from canyons to gorges. It is home to the deepest canyon at 7900 feet in North America called Hell’s Canyon. Shoshone Falls on the Snake River are higher than Niagara Falls. The state has the greatest stand of white pine trees in the country. The name of the state comes from an Indian name Ee-dah-hoe which means “gem of the mountains”.
