What do you know about the Catholic Church?

There are a lot of misconceptions going around about what the Catholic Church is, what it, teaches, how it works, etc. This quiz is not an attempt to convert anyone but just to see if you have any misconceptions. Have fun.

Note: While members of the Orthodox churches are considered to be Catholics, I am using the term here to refer to Roman Catholics only.

Keep in mind that the answers do not depend on whether you agree with the Catholic position or not. They are based on what a Catholic would believe.

    • The problem with quizzes is that it’s difficult to include all of the info. No priests are allowed to get married but some rites of the church will allow a married man to become a priest. If you are already a priest, you cannot get married.

With confession, my point was that it is not the priest who does the forgiving, but Jesus. After you have told your sins, the priest tells you that Jesus has forgiven them. The priest may offer some counseling and he will give you a penance to perform, but he does not forgive the sins. I should also point out that the penance is not something you do to earn forgiveness. There is nothing you can do to earn it. Forgiveness is a gift freely given by God through Jesus’ suffering and death at Calvary. Penance is an action to strengthen you. It’s almost always prayer or spiritual reading.

  1. 9/12. The married clergy question is an interesting one. I understand that a married priest from a non-Catholic origin can convert to Catholicism, but are there any other circumstances under which this can happen?

    • Yes. Within the Catholic Church there are approximately 20 different rites. The largest is the Latin Rite which most of the world’s Catholics belong to (90-95%). Latin Rite priests are not allowed to be married.

Each of the different rites has their own liturgy (their version of the Mass is different) and their own Canon Law (rules governing that rite). Some of the rites allow married men to become priests but not for a priest to marry.

  2. 7 right. Can you explain #2 regarding “Mary Remained A Virgin Her Entire Life”? Several times in the bible, Jesus’s brothers and sisters are mentioned.

    • The Jews used the same word for any close relation like cousin. I have an article that I wrote a while ago that I will post Friday or Saturday which explains in more detail. Right now I have to get some sleep.

    • Oh really. Please tell me how Catholicism is the root of Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman paganism which predate it. Sorry, Andrew, but you are being ridiculous.
