In an Old Testament Bible reference to Jesus the Christ as the Rose of Sharon we see a mention of Him as the church’s Bridegroom, a concept well established in the New Testament. Many common plant names have roots based on Bible people or events.
The Lenten Rose tends to bloom during the traditional Lent season, and Solomon’s Seal comes from King Solomon’s name, partly because his record of describing plants ranged from “…the cedars of Lebanon to the hyssop…”. The tradition behind Lily of the Valley and other examples are also interesting to study.
My favorite Rose of Sharon plant is white. A very hardy plant, it adapts to being shaped into a small tree and when loaded with blooms this tree’s branches remind of a weeping willow. But they spring upright again after blooming season.
It is prolific bloomer in the heat of summer. Birds love it, and hummingbirds are quite greedy about the flower’s nectar. The tree provides a bit of cooling shade from our southern sun which is especially nice for the small hydrangea I have potted under this one.

You got 12 out of 12 right!
I have three in my yard. They are in full blooms right now. White with the pink center.
Oh I know yours is a beautiful sight! No wonder you aced the quiz. :- ) Our solid white variety is just beginning its bloom season. Everyday is showier and showier. We been watching some (much like yours) that we gave to a neighbor put on their for a couple of weeks now.
9 of 10 here. I don’t think of the blue as a true blue though. Its more purple-ish..lol Good quiz.
Thanks–so glad you get to enjoy Rose of Sharon. We have the purplish blue, too, but you might like to see Proven Winner’s chiffon series for the rich, beautiful blue. I think it may fade to a lavender though.
I need to look that up. I would love a real blue one, even if it does fade to lavender. : )
I just looked it up, now I want one. Wow. It is Blue!!
