Considering the Source

Finding the used plastic beach ball shown in the pictures above prompted some thinking on thinking. This example of do as I say not as I do from so-called environmentalists is a long-standing problem in that movement. Being good stewards of the earth and promoting ecological ideas for wrong purposes are two very different things.

Involving a plastic beach ball in teaching children to just follow rather than think for themselves tips the scale against what should be a good thing. Note the bottom left photo, #36 says “Name some things that are made of or contain plastic.”  Um, how about this beach ball left out in the environment?

And when did glass become able to decompose or our closed water system change so that we can use up the earth’s water? These kinds of statements bring the entire concept of the ecological movement under suspicion because they are dishonest representations.

Maybe they deceive with half-truths or are simply hypocritical, but these people call themselves into question. That is unless they can convince an unthinking people to blindly follow them. Unthinking people do not question purported facts, motives, or consequences of not investigating all angles of an issue. Living by how they feel regarding an issue is their preference.

Obvious questions, however, lead us to consider how careful we need to be about the sources of any information we come across. Many scientists have gone down because of a personal agenda. It is far more important to teach children what proper critical thinking is so they can grow up to be true problem solvers and avoid just following anyone who has a strong sounding speech on a topic.

The quiz below can help us consider whether we use good thinking skills and carefully evaluate what we hear or read, and it can help us think through helping children grow out of naivety and into mature, effective thinkers so they can work at finding solutions to both personal problems and work productively  with others on the wider issues of the world around them.
