Antibiotic resistance: A Global Threat

Antibiotics are drugs that fight infections caused by bacteria in both humans and animals. They are also called antimicrobial drugs. Antibiotics either kill the bacteria or make it difficult for it to grow and multiply. Of recent, many bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics, giving rise to the term antibiotic resistance. When a bacterium becomes resistant to an antibiotic, it can freely grow and survive, multiplying in the cells of an individual and causes harm, even death.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on its website states that antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security and development today.
