World Introvert Day

Did you know  that January 2nd is World Introvert Day?

By definition, introversion is the state of being predominantly interested in one’s own mental self. Introverts often take pleasure in solitary activities like reading, writing, or meditating, and their energy usually dwindles during interaction, especially in large groups of people.

On the contrary, extraversion is the state of primarily obtaining gratification from outside oneself. Extraverts are energized and thrive off being around other people, and tend to be perceived as enthusiastic, talkative and assertive.

Last, an ambivert is a person who has a mix of these traits. Such people tend to be moderately comfortable with groups and social interaction, but also relish time alone, away from a crowd.

It’s important not to confuse introversion, which is mostly characterized by enjoying alone time, with shyness or social anxiety, although a person could be these things at the same time.

World Introvert Day is about bringing awareness about the inward-focused world of introverts and serves as an opportunity for people around the world to better understand and appreciate introverts. A great way to celebrate this holiday is by spending some alone time doing your favorite hobby, or pick a famous introvert and study their biography.

  1. I find, like the comedian, that I am an extrovert when I am on a stage, talking.

I like the persona that I take on. My Dad used to say, that even my voice changes, into a tenor, so that people will better hear me.

He might have said that again, if he had heard my talk at his funeral, a few years ago.

The rest of the time though, I am an introvert, preferring time on my own, most of the time.

  2. I didn’t know that. I’m an introvert who prefers solitude. I will note that date. Some say I am ambivalent but the truth is I tend to be talkative to people I have known for quite some time.

  3. As a teacher, I adapted to being an extrovert on demand. By choice I like quiet. But i have come to realize that the quiet recharge my extrovert battery.

i tend towards being what the people around me are interested in. If it is joke-telling, happy to do so. Storytelling, happy to do so. A quiet reflection of the stars, happy to do that as well!!

  4. I am a n introvert through and through. I cherish every minute I am alone. I hate crowds and I am very quiet and isolated during family reunions. But I am an animal lover and become an extrovert when I am with them…
