Winter White World

This is an interesting story that happened to me once upon a winter’s night in Riga, Latvia. We lived in the suburbs and those dark winter nights you could walk to the store and not meet a single sole. Plus the lights of the street made odd shadows as they shone through the trees. So this is my story written some years ago.

As far as snow goes it hasn’t piled up as much but it is from ankle to knee-deep in places. We live in the suburbs of Riga, Latvia and all around there are lovely snowy trees among them firs and pines and fresh, clean snow glittering in the sunshine. The streets are kept clean except in places and there you have to walk upon piled up snow. It is also difficult to get in and out of busses because you have to climb up or down piled up snow along the street to be able to get into and out of transportation. The snow reflects the light of cars so at night it seems to be much brighter out than it actually is.

Strange things also happen on snowy nights. Yesterday I was going to the store and along our major street, there are lots of cars. When the street lamps are lit it is practically as bright as day and with the snow, you almost need sunglasses from the glare as the car headlights reflect upon the snow. Along one tree-lined street, the light mingled with shadows and ahead of me I clearly saw a short woman in a wide coat. She seemed to be attempting to cross the street but since she had to plow through ankle-deep snow to reach the street I wondered why she didn’t cross at the corner where the snow has been shoveled aside.

Then I saw she changed her mind and stepped out on the pavement again. She turned to walk toward me and as I got closer she simply disappeared. I am very susceptible to the spirit world and at that moment I realized she had been a ghost. It gave me an odd feeling. I checked the spot where she had stepped into the snow and there were no footprints. It gave me an eerie feeling. I could just imagine what kind of things I might see if I walked through the woods on a snowy night but then who would go walking in the woods in the snow at night?
