What Is Your Role?

You and I are not Hollywood stars. Also may never play a character in a Hollywood movie, or movie center in our own country. But it is a fact that we are all major stars of our own lives, though we may just be co-star, or simply extras of other people’s lives, as they are in our lives also.

Imagine watching a movie in which you play a role in the film as yourself. Whatever the story, whatever character you play in a movie, a movie about you or someone else, whether it is a protagonist or an antagonist, or a supporting cast like a sidekick, a deuteragonist or a tritagonist, the movie must be very interesting and has many messages.

Imagine again to watch a movie where the movie is the true story of your life, you are the main star, must be very beautiful and impressive. See how you have affected the lives of others as you are also influenced by others, whoever they are, the protagonist or the antagonist.

A story will be interesting if all the roles live in it, played well, and affect the reader, listener, or viewer.

It is nice and proud if a character in a story acts as a hero, it seems that role is more easily lived because the lifetime of the character will be remembered as the bearer of goodness, but life becomes heavier when a character must bear the seal as a villain, as a source of calamity, traitors and so forth. Being Arjuna, Superman, Thor, Optimus Prime Autobots, Wonder Woman, are not easy, but being Duryodhana, Lex Luthor, Decepticons, Ares, Pharaoh, Judas Iscariot, war criminals, and others are also not easy at all, bad image that is deserved to be hated throughout human civilization. I am sure, to portray such an excellent antagonist character, their souls must be willing, sincere, and big-minded.

How about our story? How about you and me? What is our role? What character do we play? What should be?

  1. Sometimes actors get type cast. Christopher Lee got to be Dracula in Hammer films. In most movies he was the evil person. In Lord of the Rings he wanted to be Gandalf but because he was type cast as bad, he became Saruman the White. Saruman the White was head wizard and once good, turned greedy and corrupted by lust for power.
We don’t always chose our role in this life.

  3. Another interesting and thought-provoking topic you presented! I guess the role can change, but that’s good as long as there is development.

  4. I would have to choose protagonist. I see myself more as a hero than a villain. Always trying to help others but not necessarily being a lead role in a movie. More of a background kind of person doing for others anonymously.
