What is the best way to end the hiccups?

The hiccup is the result of involuntary spasms or contractions of the diaphragm, a muscle located below the lungs, responsible for separating the thoracic cavity from the abdominal cavity, and which plays a key role in breathing.

The method that seems to have better results when it comes to putting an end to the hiccups is drinking water, especially cold water.

Other techniques approved by science to end hiccups quickly are:1- Hold your breath for a few seconds, and release the air gradually. This maneuver can end with light sobs as it helps to relax the diaphragm and lessens the nerve impulses that trigger muscle spasms;

2- Getting scared can also interrupt the hiccup by causing the release of adrenaline, which has an effect on the diaphragm and on your nerves;

3- Blow against resistance, for example blowing against the hand, as it increases the intra-abdominal pressure, increasing resistance on the diaphragm;

4- Blow into a bag, or a balloon, by the same mechanism, increasing intra-abdominal pressure and consequent adjustment in diaphragm functioning.

In general, the hiccups disappear spontaneously in a short time and do not require any type of evaluation or treatment.

  1. I don’t know how it worked, but my mother used to give me a tea spoon of sugar and lemon juice. I loved to have hiccups just for that treat. ?
    Attempting to scare the person affected by hiccups is another commonly known solution here. We’re also told to hold our breath in various ways.
    It’s frustrating when no technique works, because it hurts after some time. ?
    You wouldn’t believe I never tried drinking cold water.
    I’ll try next time, thanks for sharing!
