Washing Fruits and Vegetables

I was visiting with the produce manager at the grocery store. He is proud of the quality  he has and a number of locally grown options as well. He pointed out something obvious that I really had not thought about much. The produce you purchase has been touched by many, many people. I always wash my produce and apparently I have been doing it wrong.

The produce should be washed with baking soda and water according to the produce manager. I am doing it that way now.

  1. I always wash and fruits and vegetables ..Washing with soda is best. The contamination of the soil is high and we have to act preventively to protect ourselves.

  2. Such an important topic to address in a post! It is surprising how many people do not wash the produce they bring home from grocery stores. One common mistake is to cut a banana in half without washing it, and then to store one half for later use. Dangerous pathogens can be passed from inedible skins to the edible parts of produce.

There are many reasons all produce needs to be washed and well rinsed as quickly as possible, but certainly before consuming it.. I use a 16 oz spray bottle of 1/2 cup vinegar, water, and just a tiny dot of dish soap in it. Now I will consider using baking soda.

  3. I wouldn’t think you should wash lettuce that way. I do wash my fruits and vegetables off with water, but maybe now I will add some baking soda to it.
