Visiting Penha de Francia, Spain

Earlier this month I visited with some friends the province of El Cabaco in Spain to visit the Penha de Francia sanctuary that sits at the top of the Sierra de Francia, surrounded by the Batuecas-Serra de Francia Natural Park.

The main attraction of this Natural Park is the Penha de Francia sanctuary located at 1,723 meters, considered the highest Marian sanctuary in the world. Known for its “Black Virgin”, this famous sanctuary is practically impossible to visit during the winter, because of the snow, but in summer it has a large influx of pilgrims and tourists. It has a large lodge, in addition to the convent where the Dominican friars reside, since 1437.
