Research is on and Botulism is what is suspected. This is caused by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. Botulism leads to paralysis. Retrievers did say some birds were found alive in the water but they could not move.
It is also suspected that the water could be the culprit and illegal salt mining could have led to this.
This disease is not restricted to birds alone but human beings are also susceptble to it specially eating contaminated food.
I am devastated

Sadly this happens even here in New Zealand, we had a lot of dead birds in the middle of a hot summer in auckland.
Fast evaporation of water, bread that people feed the birds becomes poisonous and kills the birds.
Bird rescue took in many birds
Never feed birds bread near water
My heart bleeds when I get to hear such news.
That is tragic indeed and I sure hope it gets cleaned up and does not spread to other birds
Everything is going wrong for the flora and fauna
Environment problems are neglected by the government.

Just when these poor things were hoping to get a bettere place away from winter this is what happens to them.
The government should step in and find out how the contaminants got into the water and stop it. These birds help our environment.
They are doing it but you know how the government machinery works. It will take ages and then forgotten.
It’s very sad news. So pity people do not think how they contamine and pollute the world
The worst is the thought that these babies came for comfort and see what they got.
