Updated tech reviews and the future of meetings…

Tech Review Updates:

•5g MiFi,- I was in downtown Washington DC for a meeting. Sitting on the national mall using my 5g MiFi. I was getting between 1.3 and 1.4 Mbits of downloads for nearly 45 minutes (the length of time I could relax at lunch). The highest home network speed you can get I 1 Mbit down, but you don’t get one Mbit. You get 60 to 70% of that for any one device.

•Travis, the Translator – I’ve been using the device when talking to my good friend in Brazil. Previously when we spoke, he would have to use English. Now he can speak in Portuguese, and I can speak in English, and Travis translates. There were a few words that the device missed badly, but overall the translation was awesome, plus with two native speakers, it was able to keep up in two languages!

•Polycom Voyager – I love the headset, and I use it every day now!

•Kestrel 5500 personal portable weather station – I measured the temperature on the national mall the other day (97 degrees). The device allows you to determine wind speed, wind direction as well as altimeter, temperature, and barometric pressure. I find myself taking it with me everywhere I go now.

I do like to share updates on reviews from time to time. The problem I have with reviews is of well anything other than books and movies is the reviewer doesn’t revisit their reviews. I like to do quarterly updates of reviews. My focus is on technology that is available, but I also like to follow up on how I am using that tech two, three and more months down the road.

One of the things I always struggle with is should I carry something in my computer bag. All four of the items updated today are in my computer bag. I moved out a rolling bag, to reduce the wear and tear on my shoulders. But these items go with me wherever I go.  One of the things I find interesting is the additional small items that I often take with me to make work life easier. Portable mini-projectors, sometimes Pico Projectors have improved immeasurably since their initial release ten years ago. You can easily create a meeting space anywhere. The one thing about the smaller projectors is the number of lumens they can project. You wouldn’t use a smaller PICO projector outdoors during the daylight hours.

Portable speakers are evolving, as well. It makes it easy to set up in a room, anywhere and quickly have a meeting that multiple people can hear, speak and see at the same time!
