Balloon flowers or Platycodon grandiflorus are members of the Belflower/Campanula family. This flower is actually more of a star shaped than a balloon shaped flower. However, its claim to fame is its balloon shaped flower buds. The flower itself does have a puffy appearance so you can also see the resemblance between the flower and a balloon.
These whimsical balloon flowers are drought and pest resistance and do best in full sun. I have had my balloon flower plant for about eight years now and it is planted in part shade. While I do get flowers each year I find that they are somewhat short lived. I also notice that the color seems to have changed from an original light blue to violet to purple over the years.
