Traditional Loco Moco

Having discovered the name loco moco on the Internet I just had to explore further and find out what it was. At first, it made me think of a dance like the once-popular “Locomotion” by Little Eva. I discovered that this is a traditional meal that is part of Hawaiian cuisine.

It has a variety of ways to prepare it but basically it consists of white rice on top of which are a hamburger patty, fried egg, and brown gravy. Some of the other different ways it’s prepared can include bacon, Spam, chili, kalua pork, beef teriyaki or chicken, shrimp, and other kinds of meats.

You can find it on many menus at Hawaiian restaurants on the mainland. The dish has also traveled to the Pacific Islands from Hawaii to Samoa on to Guam and Saipan even the Japanese have come to enjoy it. To me, it sounds delicious in its original form however the one change I would prefer is to have my hamburger patty, fried egg, and gravy served on top of fried potatoes or mashed potatoes.

Actually I don’t see why you couldn’t do the Locomotion after you have stuffed yourself full of Loco Moco.

  1. The twins and I used to watch a cooking show. We saw an episode focused on loco mock. So, when we went to Hawaii we had free time the very first day. We went in search of Loco Moco!!! we had the dish three times while in Hawaii.

We make it at home now. It isn’t hard to make!
