The Talents of Saturday Night Live

You can tell that a show has plenty of talent when it debuts on October 11, 1975, and is still on the air today. It began as a topical comedy sketch show with the amazing talents of Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, Garrett Morris, Jane Curtin, and Laraine Newman. The show ran for 90 minutes and was broadcast live from Studio 8H in the GE Building at Rockefeller Center, New York City. At the opening of each show, an actor would tell everyone that they were filming live from New York City. I remember someone saying to me that this show was what you did if you didn’t have a date.

This show is the creation of Canadian comedy writer Lorne Michaels. Through Saturday Night Live many truly memorable characters were introduced. Gilda Radner’s Roseanne Roseannada, the Coneheads, Dana Carvey’s Church Lady, bodybuilders Hans and Franz, Coffee Talk host Linda Richman and Billy Crystal’s Fernando among others.

Over the years the cast had changed and it was a great place to launch a career for actors and actresses. This is where other talents like Bill Murray, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Mike Myers, Adam Sandler, Chris Farley, and others started their rise to stardom. Some of the sketches from the show were turned into movies like “The Blues Brothers” and “Wayne’s World”.

The Saturday Night Live debut episode was hosted by comedian George Carlin and later that year by Candace Bergen. The youngest person to ever host the show was in 1982 when Drew Barrymore stepped into the shoes of the host at the tender age of seven. Starting from 1976 Steve Martin hosted 14 times. Other actors that have hosted many times are Alec Baldwin and John Goodman. Musical guests who have performed on the show include Paul Simon, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, James Taylor, Sting and Beck, and the Foo Fighters.

Not only known for its parodies and impersonations Saturday Night Live is also known for its political humor. Chevy Chase portrayed President Gerald Ford, Dana Carvey spoofed President George H.W. Bush and more recently Amy Poehler took a poke at Senator Hillary Clinton.
