The sunbird

These tiny sunbirds are up early before the sun comes up and sing so sweetly. I usually wake up to their calls. This tiny guy is just about 5-6 cm in length.

The females are dowdy, greenish brown in color but  these little guys shimmer in the sun their dark feathers either have a purple sheen to them or sometimes a greenish sheen. Some sunbirds look almost metallic because their black feather have a metallic multicolored sheen to them. They never stay in one place for a minute, they are chirping and jumping from one branch to another.

These birds make their neatly tailored nests on low hanging branches.  The nest look almost like the weaver birds nest but no so beautifully woven.

This post was inspired by MohanBabu’s post on sunbirds.
