The Snallygaster in the Blue Ridge Mountains

If you live in or near the Blue Ridge Mountains of Maryland do be careful of the snallygaster. The name was derived from the German words schnelle geeschter which means “quick spirit”.

The myths that surround this creature apparently came along with German immigrants who settled in this area around the 1700s. The snallygaster supposedly is a creature that is half-bird and half reptile. It has a metal beak and is said to come down from the sky to carry off its victims and suck their blood.

To me, it sounds like some vampire lover or someone who knows vampires really well had a very strange nightmare. The story gets even better because this creature has an enemy that resembles a werewolf by the name of Dwayyo and the two have had really mean mythical battles. Now I am not saying these two live in the Blue Ridge Mountains but it does make for a good horror story if you happen to bump into something that looks like either of these two.

With stories like this going around it would make for a really great campfire story right on Halloween and right in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Stories like this can make the imagination dance,

In the photo, you can see the Snallygaster and the Dwayyo,
