The Royal Wedding – your thoughts?

In 1776, America rejected the British Royal Family, rather ironically, considering this weekend’s wedding, around that time Britain had their first black Queen, Sophie Charlotte. We don’t have one today but a 37% black lady called Meghan Markle is now a member of the Royal Family – although she is not very black. She can’t be a princess as you need to be born a princess to be a princess and so to be known as the Duchess of Sussex. If she looked like Lupita Nyong’o (12-Years A Slave) then Harry may not have been allowed to marry her. The babies would have curls and that would be just too much for the British Royal family, whether they want to modernize or not. But it’s a start. She is beautiful, smart, and the Royal Family need some of that. Harry was the first royal to marry with a beard in 125 years and the church full of deliberate diversity.

Its was more Hollywood than traditional royal wedding this time around as few politicians were present and replaced by A-Listers like David Beckham and George Clooney. Even the British Royal Family can’t top the power of celebrity and succumbed. These are the new royals and the old royals have to roll with the times. There were no world leaders invited, I guess because that meant inviting the ghastly Trump, and so we didn’t want to embarrass him by inviting all the big world leaders apart from him. Even our own Prime Minister couldn’t go because of that cretin.

Will it last? Brides were selected for what’s best for the Royal Family in the old days …good baby stock, subservient and attractive. Kate Middleton has excelled in that department. But the American is her own woman and the sparks could fly between her and Harry. She won’t like being told what to do by the royal PR machine. Hollywood diva behavior won’t work here, Diana’s down fall. Harry’s body language at the altar wasn’t great, constantly playing with his mouth as if concealing his real feelings. I’m sure they like each other but this is Megan’s biggest career role and she wants an Oscar. Harry just wants a quiet life but clearly under pressure to marry before he has his brother bald spot.

  1. I would take issue with you on one or two points. You do not need to be “born a princess” to acquire that title – Princess Diana is a good example, being the daughter of non-royals.

It is also stretching things to describe Queen Charlotte as black. It is quite possible that she had Africans in her ancestry, but these went back at least nine generations, so there would have been precious little “black” DNA in her blood!

I am always puzzled by attempts to assign “blackness” to mixed-race people. Does it ever work the other way round? If a black person had one white grandparent, would they call themselves white? I doubt it!

  2. I did not watch the wedding, however I read every single article about it! They look so beautiful and happy! I loved both her wedding dress and the prince’s look too! Now I regret not watching it! My vote goes for Beckham though xD
