The Poison Queen

In this case, this is from the plant world. The flower is known as Aconitum and also referred to as “the poison queen” or “devil’s helmet”. It is among the most dangerous plants in the world. In ancient times toxins were taken from this flower and used to kill wolves giving it the nickname “wolfbane”. The roots of Aconitum contain the Nepalese poison known as bikh, bish, or nabee. One species of this plant is native to western and central Europe.

Its name comes from the village called Akonai that was once part of the land the Mariandynoi people occupied. This area today is in Turkey. The flowers are a lovely purple shade and have been grown in gardens. However, due to its poisonous nature, I would not want it in my garden. The poison from this plant can be absorbed through the skin that is cut or open wounds.  In ancient China, it was used for poison darts and a paste made from the plant was smeared on the shafts of the arrows so whoever removed the arrow from a wounded soldier would also absorb the poison.
