The Luck of the Polar Bears

Recently polar bears got really lucky when a federal court granted them a piece of land in Alaska which is bigger than California. The land is a 187,000 square-mile area off the North Slope of the state. It all happened in 2008 when polar bears became a threatened species.

Now they have their own territory where they can hunt, breed and just plain have a lot of fun. Hopefully, this will make their populations increase.

In the winter polar bears can be found as far south as the St. Lawrence Island and in the summer they gather around the edge of pack ice the Chukchi Sea and the Arctic Ocean.

    • You have a good idea there about getting other polar bears to Alaska except that recently some bears have wandered into town or cities and people have not been happy about this. They have to take care of this problem and then perhaps they can add more polar bears.
