The Kingdom of Elleore

If someone told you that they would like to tell you about the Kingdom of Elleore you would probably ask them what fairy tale or book this kingdom is from. Well, you would get a very surprising answer. There is actually a real kingdom named Elleore.

It counts as a micro-nation and is located in Denmark. It was founded in 1944 and its ruler was King Leo III. There are more people living in the kingdom during the summer than at any other time during the year. The Kingdom of Elleore is on an island off the northern coast of Denmark. It was founded and declared independent at the time when some school teachers decided to organize a summer camp. The kingdom has issued some postal stamps and some coins and so far has six monarchs. It has its own council of state, own laws, and currency.

What is amazing is that in this kingdom all of its residents are away on holiday for 51 weeks of the year. When their annual festival Elle Week comes round the island comes alive and King Leon III and his queen invite their people to celebrate its existence.  Visitors can sail past the kingdom on the way to Roskilde Harbor or take the M/S Sagafjord and hear about the island as the boat sails by. You must remember that this island is private property and visitors cannot go ashore.
