The irritating eczema

The medical term for eczema is dermatitis. There are several types of dermatitis but the most popular is atopic dermatitis. Eczema results in inflammation of the skin. It is characterized by itchiness, red skin and rashes. The symptoms may include dry, itchy, red skin. Typical affected skin areas include the folds of the arms, the back of the knees, wrists, face and hands.

The exact cause of eczema is unclear but irritants, allergies and slow blood flow in the veins especially in the legs, have been identified. Some of the irritants may include exposure of the hands to water. Allergens cause a hypersensitivity reaction in the skin and may include tobacco smoke and molds.

Eczema is frequently treated with moisturizers and steroid creams although side effects have been known to occur in steroid creams. These treatments do not guarantee a solution. Most eczema caused by allergic reactions is cured by stopping contact with what is causing the reaction. Some people claim that sulfur ointment relieves eczema but there is no scientific backing to that claim.
