The First Snow Globe

Do you like snow globes? Now that I am living in Florida and snow is but a memory to me I couldn’t resist getting a snow globe with the skyline of my hometown NYC and love to shake it up to watch the snowfall.

The first snow globe showed up at the Paris Universal Exposition in France in 1878. Many people admired it. Then in 1900 a mechanic named Edwin Perzy I created a snow globe by accident. He was fixing a dim light bulb and noticed that when a glass globe was filled with water it seemed to fill the whole room with light when placed in front of a candle. When he didn’t get that same result with a light bulb he thought of filing a globe with semolina flakes and hoped that they would reflect light. What did happen is that the flakes reminded him of snow and Perzy figured out the snow globe. Once he had patented his idea you could say the rest is snow globe history.

Today you can get snow globes with almost any kind to image imaginable and they have become very popular. But as they say, snow globes can become weird too. I just took a look at the most unusual and two which struck me very odd was one with Michael Myers of Halloween fame attacking a girl and when shaken red flakes fall all over and one with a frozen Jack Torrance which we remember from the King movie “The Shining”. Not my kind of snow globes but to each his own I guess.
