The dawn masses in the Christmas season

In the Philippines, the official start of the Christmas season is December 16 which is also the start of the so called dawn masses. The church holds the dawn masses at 4 am. It is called novena because the dawn masses are held for 9 days which culminates on Christmas eve just before midnight.

I think it is only in the Philippines where dawn masses are practiced because it is not practical to have that in cold countries. The attraction of the dawn masses are the native snack food sold around the church grounds. It can serve as breakfast for the church goers and even for those who do not go to church. Those native snack foods like rice cake only appear during the Christmas season.
