The Brown Pelican Returns to Louisiana

The poison DDT was the demise of the brown pelican which was the state bird of Louisiana. In 1938 there were 500 pairs of pelicans living in the state. Then in the 1950s and 1960s, farmers used DDT. Already by 1963, you could not find a single brown pelican in Louisiana. Now that they have stopped using DDT the brown pelican is back in large numbers along the Gulf Coast. These birds are no longer considered endangered. The brown pelican was declared recovered in 1995 and today about 40,000 of them live in Louisiana “The Pelican State”.
