The Black Swallowtail Butterfly

One of my favorite butterflies that visit the garden some summers is the black swallowtail. I captured this photo while the butterfly was hanging out on one of my purple coneflowers.  They seem to be attracted to these flowers. I discovered one year that  caterpillars of the black swallowtail butterfly love parsley as they ate all my parsley plants one year. However, it was worth it to see the beautiful butterflies that my parsley plants helped produce.

As you can see the black swallowtail is mostly black with yellow and blue trim s around the wings. Both the male and the females have similar tones but the male has more yellow tones than blue tones. Both males and females have that distinctive orange eyespots on the back of their wings. They are common in parts of Canada.
