Terrorists Under the Bed

Young boy trying to sleep in his bed during a scary thunderstorm while a monster lurks below.

I don’t know how many of you remember being afraid of things like monsters in the closet or the Boogeyman but boy, you will be surprised how times have changed. I remember when I was little I never really mentioned if I thought something was under the bed but I never wanted to have one of my arms dangling down. I also always needed a nightlight if I was all alone in a room. Someone just recently told me that a mom became practically speechless by what her four-year-old son had to say. The family lives in the U.S. in the suburbs of Long Island, New York. One of my closest friends there just spoke to me and told me this story. I too was totally amazed.

The boy’s name is Ted and both of his parents attempt to raise him as normally as possible and don’t let him watch TV unless it is a children’s program. He has many favorite Disney cartoons he enjoys watching over and over and hasn’t even begun to learn about the computer. After his bedtime, his parents will watch the late news so he is not up at that time. One night Ted’s mom hears her son crying. Thinking he has had a nightmare or woken up and become afraid of a monster in the closet or under the bed. Entering her son’s room she turned on the light and sat down on his bed. She took him in her lap and cheerfully asked, “Did the mean monster under the bed scare you?” To which he tearfully replied, “No mommy, I think there are terrorists under the bed”.

Mom was so amazed and realized that no matter how hard she and her husband tried you could not keep a four-year-old from knowing what was happening in this world. Afterward, they had a long talk with their son, of course as much as that was possible and told him that in their house he didn’t have to worry about finding terrorists under the bed.
