I have been using the Oculus Go headset for the past few months. It, versus the Oculus Rift, is closer to the Hololens in that it is a stand-alone product. The biggest difference between Go and Hololens is the fact that Hololens is an AR (or were you right now, augmented reality) versus the immersive nature of the Go headset or Virtual Reality. Having had a chance to use the two, I can say the first thing about a headset has to be fit. The next area of concern is the weight of the headset.“ The Oculus Go is a portable or mobile headset. It does not require a computer. The Oculus Rift requires a computer. Of the two you can interact with more complex environments with the Rift than the Go.
But, Go is very impressive as a solution. I enjoy using the Go headset as a way to watch Hulu and Netflix documentaries and ESPN events. Eventually, I suspect that there will be remote clients for Cable/Satellite providers for the Go system as well. That way you can watch live sporting and other live events on a simulated 100-inch television. I also have an application the Go that allows me to connect my computer to the Go, making it into a great portable monitor. I still prefer using a projector, as having the headset on means that I am completely touch typing. I am more likely to make errors when I cannot look down and check my finger placement from time to time.
AR and VR are interesting conversations. AR integrates what you see (real world) with additional information. VR or Virtual Reality immerses you in the environment. I currently have a virtual environment that places you in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef. You can also choose space, cityscapes, and countrysides. Oculus GO also as onboard memory so you can take the system where you go! IT does well in sunlight or darkness because you are viewing the screen of the GO and you don’t see the real world. I wouldn’t walk around with Oculus Go on; you won’t be able to see. You can walk around with Hololens on, but not with Go on. Overall my rating for the Oculus go is 9 out of 10.

Great review! Cool gadget to have.
Oculus has done a great job building a wonderful product so far…
I wonder how long it will be until monitors get phased out entirely
I published a piece more than three years ago now, called “The Screen as a Service” where screens simply let you know they were available.
The future of the monitor? Fading fast.
I expect that direct interface will ultimately phase out all peripherals, but do you think we will go projection and then holograms or in a more AR/VR direction?
wow, now that is a question for a blog post. Projection and Hologram vs. AR/VR. I suspect the easy answer will be both.
That said, there are nuances to that answer that will require more depth. I will focus on that broader answer in my tech blog today!
It was a hell of a post, if I do say so myself…
it was a hell of a question, as well! You actually made me stop and think!
like two jazz musicians riffing off eachother
Very interesting information, I may be able to use them usefully
For today they are more for gamers than anyone else. But they are moving towards the rest of us!!!!
Very clearly, you have strengthened my understanding of the two devices! Cool reviews!
It is an interesting space right now, honestly. The changes in the world of “headsets and googles continue to amaze me.
I also never imagined before that the headset will develop in such a way!
i had one years ago when I was traveling overseas. It projected video from my media player. I suspect looking back, I should have seen this next thing.
For me, at least I always have sources of information and reviewers of this kind of technology.
That is a good place to be. As my boss reminded me last night. I am the backstop of technology.
I better know what is coming.
So that’s how it is, luck seems to be on my side.
wow… amazing product. hmm… how much?
This is my smile. ?
I have seen the Oculus Go for 199 US. That said, I have no idea if they are available outside the US as of today.
ohh no problem with that we are very close to China. lol… That Oculus Go will surely have the name Superculus Go Go Go… ?
ROFL
certainly if not supreme wandering while sitting device!
🙂
yup.. so plus.. plus.. pluse… cheaper… and… hmmm…. with a lot of freebies. like a bag, a battery, a remote control… a snack…drink, burger… cake… you name it.. they are all in the package. ??
well sadly because it is virtual reality, they can include that and still only give you the headset (the bag, snacks and other goodies are VIRTUAL!)
haha not virtual.. real ones.. but virtual reality you say.. hmmm… maybe it will just be in 2D if it is made in China.
no offense lol
Actually Gina has released a number of 3d devices in the US – but the accessories for a VR headset would be virtual 🙂
just kidding about 2D lol. you know China knock-off imitation. lol
I have a good friend that built a very interesting tool. He had it on Amazon for 19.99 and his sales were amazing.
He built the tool in a Chinese factory.
One day he notices his sales went to zero or very small.
He checked, there was a competitive product on the market. He lowered his price. So did the competitor.
Finally, he bought one from the competitor.
It was shipped from the Chinese factory that built his. They stole the idea.
Amazon removed it, but it was too late.
yikes… that’s super bad experience.same quality?
Sounds good we don’t have that here, but great to have
I don’t think Oculus has shipped outside the US yet, but I could be completely wrong.
