Tattered Swallowtail

This beautiful Swallowtail butterfly visited my summer garden. You can see the tattered wings. I am sure there are stories to be told, battles it has survived. Amazing treasure provided my nature. A welcomed visitor to my garden’s butterfly bush.

This unique species of swallowtail is a quick and strong flier, gliding when able. The males are a bright yellow, while the females can exhibit two different color forms; yellow and black and black and blue. The darker form is more common in the southern states. The caterpillar is just as remarkable, it resembles a small snake with eyespots. This butterfly particularly enjoys pink, purple, and red flowers, and is a wonderful visitor to any garden.

I look forward to seeing these beautiful butterflies in my garden each year. So much to offer from nature. They come in other colors as well. The blue and black ones are stunning.

  1. This is the biggest benefit in having a garden. The home garden can support so many beautiful life forms from butterflies to birds. Will try sharing some interesting pictures from our garden soon.
