Many people need to take the IELTS exam. The most common reason is for non-native English speakers who want to get into a University. Others many want to immigrate to an English speaking country like the UK, Australia or Canada.
As an online English teacher, I often help people prepare for this test. In fact, I believe that even English speakers, were they to take this test would have to practice for it.
The speaking part of the test is especially difficult. This part has three sections.
Interview: In this section the examiner asks common questions such as your name, occupation and then a warm-up question. Usually it is about your hometown, but sometimes it can be a question that asks about if you like flowers.
Cue Card: This section is a questions with a few questions. You get one minute to prepare and then speak between one and two minutes. This section is usually about everyday subjects. Make sure that you have practiced this section with a teacher as many students either speak for less than one minute, or others speak way too long.
Discussion: This section is usually more questions on the same subject as the Cue Card, and it is supposed to be a discussion between you and the examiner. Sometimes the examiner will disagree with you.

I have passed the 3 English examinations from Cambridge University (First, Advanced and Proficiency). It was a challenge and I had these 3 diplomas on my wall now.

I should practice listening more to people about what they are saying.
I work on like to help people prepare for the test, Some people do well one the reading or listening but not one the speaking, but the score is an average of the four parts. Also you get a score, not pass or fail. Each institution decides what score is acceptable for entrance.
This kind of learning would come in handy for me because I had forgotten English a little.

I am British, I have worked as a librarian at a British university, and I have therefore spoken to many overseas students who will have had to pass the IELTS test before being admitted.
I have to say that the standard of English that I have encountered has varied tremendously, and I really do wonder how some of the students passed the test, given how appalling their English was! Either that, or the standard expected for a pass is much lower than it should be.
