Swaddle Babies Orchid

I think most of us know what swaddled babies look like. What you probably did not know is that there is an exotic bloom called the swaddle babies orchid that is native to the Colombian Andes in South America. These unusual and lovely orchids have an opening in their upper parts and when you look closely inside it looks like there is a swaddled baby.

All the flowers have a hinged lip and this plant blooms in the summertime. It has large waxy flowers that emit a very fragrant perfume. When an insect enters the flower it shoves against the column of the flower where pollen is found and drinks the nectar. In this way, the insect picks up pollen and moving along pollination occurs.
