Surprise Threesome in the Garden

Captured three butterflies in Dustin’s garden. I was so excited to see three visiting the butterfly bush at one time. It is challenging to capture three at once without them fluttering away. I also see tiny skippers and other types of butterflies as well. An exciting time in the garden right now. The hotter it gets, the more butterflies I see.

Can you identify these butterflies? I will make it easy for you. The one to the far left is a Buckeye. In the back is the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail. And the one in the front is also a Black Swallowtail. He is black but his wings are so sheer you can almost see through them.

The male swallowtail is yellow with dark stripes. Female has 2 forms: one yellow like the male and the other black with shadows of dark stripes. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between male and female with the yellow butterflies.

You can tell the black one has lived a rough few weeks and his time will be ending soon. All butterflies live a short life. But I enjoy each moment I can with these winged visitors.

  1. I have never been able to differentiate one butterfly from another.
I agree life is too short we should enjoy every moment of it.

    • Yes I know but this is in my backyard and I have never captured three at once. Very excited. I have been to butterfly houses. They were fun but I prefer my backyard.

  2. I was at a butterfly show and I saw them all at once and I just didn’t manage to paint them … great picture … you are the master of butterfly painting, dear Carol

    • Very excited to see these on my photo Lado. I have been to butterfly houses. They were fun but I prefer my backyard. You are very kind my friend.

      • But I don’t have many in the garden this year, my dear friend … there were very few bees too … I don’t know what’s wrong with these insects this year … the only wasps and flies are liquid

          • Beekeepers are very cautious in our country and say that they will have up to 60% less honey than last year …. it was supposed to be a rainy May when the bees seem to be picking honey the most …. but it has been quite a whole month in May rainy

  3. That’s awesome! I wish I had such a great garden here, and I bet the deer do also. I will need to close off an area because the question, “What don’t the deer eat?” is often heard in this town. They appear to eat lots of stuff. Lots. It was here that I got my first Swallowtail picture. In the blackberries.

    • Thanks Howard. I planted a new butterfly bush in April, so now with the two bushes, I have so many every single day. I saw monarchs last week for the first time this year. The hummingbirds visit as well. These bushes have a sweet fragrance. Our land is fenced around our home. There used to be deer before all the construction but not so much any more. Just rabbits.
