Should abortion be legal?

In Ireland they have voted to legalize abortion. After voting in their first openly gay Prime Minister last year it didn’t take long for him to offer a referendum on abortion, currently illegal in Ireland accept if its a life threatening situation. The debate raged and the sisterhood won, 65/35. It was thought the rural vote would make the vote close but not so as young people won the day as LGBT and feminist groups organised the Yes vote. Previously girls would have to get the ferry to the U.K to have an abortion. Northern Ireland, part of the UK, has kept their abortion ban. I think it should always been a woman’s decision and happy the ban has been overturned..

  1. I couldn’t answer #2 because I didn’t know if yes meant I was for abortion or yes, I would vote.

    The “right to control your own body” argument is faulty. If a woman is sexually active, she has already decided what to do with her body. Abortion is killing a baby to avoid the consequences of her decision. Also, the baby being killed is not her body. It may have gotten half its genes from her but the baby is not her.

  2. Rasma explained everything nicely. My abortion is allowed in my country. I am not really an adherents of abortion, children should be working … but there are some circumstances that should exist

This is an issue that has always caused me a problem, because I know that I started life as an unwanted pregnancy (fathered by someone other than my mother’s husband) and these days I would have been a perfect candidate for an abortion. It is therefore somewhat hypocritical of me to support a “woman’s right to choose”.

    However, I admit the hypocrisy and I do support the right. The reason is that there are too many cases of harm being caused when abortion is denied, and the harm is both physical and mental.

  4. You see you have to understand how certain women might feel. If it is a medical issue or something that endangers health then yes, by all means, the woman should have an abortion. However, if she was fooling around and got pregnant not even wanting a child then no she should carry to full term and give up to adoption. There are so many women who really want children and cannot have them. These are just a few examples and how I feel about this issue.

    • Even the Catholic Church, the most active opposition to abortion, acknowledges that any procedure performed to save the life of the mother is permissible even if it ends the baby’s life. However there are no known medical conditions that can be cured merely by having an abortion.

      For example, if a woman develops ovarian cancer while pregnant, she would have to have a hysterectomy which would result in the child’s death. That would be permitted under Catholicism. However, just getting an abortion would not stop the cancer or save the mother.
