Salad Molds

We all know that there are food trends that come and go. However when there is a specific kind of food trend then it seems everyone must try it. Suddenly even though you might not have thought of eating a certain food you keep hearing about it so much that you just have to try it even just once.

In the 1930s people could not get enough of congealed salads. These were also known as Jello-O salads. What it meant was that you could chop up any kind of food items, place them in a bowl, pour over Jell-O and congeal it in the fridge. Then at mealtime, all you had to do was unmold the salad on a plate and have a colorful and interesting meal. The reason this all began was that it was the time of the Great Depression and people just wanted to have something that would amuse them, taste good and bring a bit of joy into a drab world.

Once this trend took off the Jell-O company started offering people ideas and recipes. Of course, as with anything that was once a good idea it eventually also becomes a bad idea. If you remember that at one time people started making Jello-salads at holiday time and soon there were many that got tired of the molded food.

The National Museum of American History tried out some of the Depression-era cookbook recipes and among the ones they tried were a chicken salad olive mold, tomato aspic, and a molded mayonnaise salad. Actually, if you think about it this is not a bad idea especially when you are hungry and the temperatures really heat up in the summer.
