Rich, tasty coconut milk

Coconut milk is the white liquid that is extracted from grating the meat of coconuts. Water is added to the grated meat which suspends the fat. The fat is then skimmed off and the remaining liquid passed through cheesecloth to extract coconut milk. Coconut milk is often confused with coconut water. Coconut water is the liquid that is at the center of the coconut. It is also a component of coconut milk.

Coconut milk is very tasty. This is due to its high amount of saturated fat. It has been used in several dishes and can be enjoyed as a drink. Here in Nigeria and Asia, there is a dish called Coconut rice which is enjoyed and savored by many. Coconut milk is also used to make traditional drinks.

As in everything, consumption of large amounts of coconut milk is not good for your health. Its high amount of saturated fat can raise blood levels of cholesterol. But when taken in moderation, it is a healthy drink that is rich in manganese and iron. Coconut milk can easily turn rancid. So, if you prepare it at home, be sure to use it within a day.
